The Alignment of Rods and Disks in Turbulence

چکیده

We study the orientation and rotational dynamics of anisotropic particles in homogenous isotropic turbulence. By analyzing direct numerical simulation (DNS) data at Taylor-microscale Reynolds number of Rλ = 180, we quantify the preferential alignment between particle orientations and vorticity, as well as alignment with principal stretching directions defined by the Cauchy-Green strain tensor. This tensor quantifies stretching experienced by material elements in turbulence and provides a natural basis for studying particle alignment in turbulence. While previous work has focused primarily on thin rods, we extend the study to oblate disks. Both rods and disks are a specific class of anisotropic particles known as axisymmetric ellipsoids. These particles are defined by their aspect ratio (α), the ratio of their length (L) to their diameter, (d). Rods have an aspect ratio of α > 1 while disks have an aspect ratio of α < 1. The case of α = 1 is a sphere. In this thesis, we compare the preferential alignments of rods with disks in turbulence. Rods preferentially align with vorticity as a result of both quantities independently aligning with the strongest extensional stretching direction, as defined by the maximum Cauchy-Green eigenvector, êL1. In contrast, disks orient perpendicular to vorticity and preferentially align with the strongest compressional stretching direction, as defined by the smallest Cauchy-Green eigenvector, êL3. Furthermore, we study the relationship between the principle stretching eigenframe defined by the eigenvectors of the Cauchy-Green strain tensor and the principle rate of stretching eigenframe defined by the eigenvectors of the strain-rate tensor, the symmetric part of the velocity gradient tensor.

Alignment of vorticity and rods with Lagrangian fluid stretching in turbulence

Stretching in continuum mechanics is naturally described using the Cauchy–Green strain tensors. These tensors quantify the Lagrangian stretching experienced by a material element, and provide a powerful way to study processes in turbulent fluid flows that involve stretching such as vortex stretching and alignment of anisotropic particles. Analysing data from a simulation of isotropic turbulence...

واکاوی نقش تلاطم های شخصی در تشخیص فرصت های کارآفرینانۀ کشاورزی (مورد مطالعه: استان کرمانشاه)

Although a relatively neglected topic within the entrepreneurship and creativity literature, personal turbulence has been suggested to account for emergence of new ventures, intention to start a new business and opportunity recognition. On the basis of the predominant impact of personal turbulence on various crucial aspects of the entrepreneurial process, some scholars contend that personal tur...

Stringent Limits on the Polarized Submillimeter Emission from Protoplanetary Disks

We present arcsecond-resolution Submillimeter Array (SMA) polarimetric observations of the 880μm continuum emission from the protoplanetary disks around two nearby stars, HD 163296 and TW Hydrae. Although previous observations and theoretical work have suggested that a 2-3% polarization fraction should be common for the millimeter continuum emission from such disks, we detect no polarized conti...

Accretion Does Not Drive the Turbulence in Galactic Disks

Rapid accretion of cold intergalactic gas plays a crucial role in getting gas into galaxies. It has been suggested that this gas accretion proceeds along narrow streams that might also directly drive the turbulence in galactic gas, dynamical disturbances, and bulge formation. In cosmological simulations, however, it is impossible to isolate and hence disentangle the effect of cold stream accret...
